Hamamatsu’s S12706 is a high sensitivity CMOS linear image sensor consisting of a photosensitive area with tiny pixels. It has a long photosensitive area with an effective length of 28.672 mm, comprising 4096 pixels, each with a pixel size measuring 7 × 7 µm.
Hamamatsu CMOS linear image sensors, ideal for VIS, UV-VIS, and VIS-NIR spectrometers, are enhanced for spectroscopy applications. For instance, the pixel shape is designed tall and narrow to improve light distribution from a spectrometer's grating. Some of these sensors are also provided with UV sensitivity and do not require extra UV coatings, they also display superior linearity, which is a vital benefit in spectroscopy measurements. CMOS sensors for spectroscopy may also include an electronic shutter operation and a built-in timing generator, and are operated using a single power supply.
The S11639-01 has 2048 pixels, 14x200 µm pixel size, and is comparable to a Sony ILX511B with a UV coating.
Recent progress in CMOS sensor technology has made the devices suitable for several scientific, industrial, and commercial applications formerly led by CCD sensors. The developments include thinner and highly compact packages, lower noise, and additional on-chip operations.
New CMOS sensors have features matching to CCDs, and they provide specific benefits such as a simpler external circuit design and simpler operation. Hamamatsu provides CMOS sensors in area and linear arrays for a number of applications, such as spectroscopy, displacement measurement, barcode scanning and imaging.
