A decade ago, Ørsted initiated its transformation from a black to a green energy company. Since then, it has reduced its use of coal by 73% and more than halved its CO₂ emissions. The company is in the process of converting its coal-fired power stations in Denmark to sustainable biomass, and by 2023, it will be completely coal-free and will have reduced its CO₂ emissions by 96%. In 2017, the company divested its upstream oil & gas business, completing its transformation to becoming a leading pure play renewables company.

Ørsted has pioneered a new innovative bio-energy technology called Renescience. This technology converts unsorted household waste to energy using an enzyme treatment process. The first one in production is located in Northwich, UK.
