The HR Series is a new line of high-reliability cryogenic temperature sensors for mission-critical applications.Starting with well-established temperature sensor technology, Lake Shore has created a family of off-the-shelf sensors that have completed rigorous testing procedures to assure users of increased reliability.
For When the Best Needs to Be Better
It is necessary to scrutinize sensors more closely when cryogenic temperature control or monitoring is a significant component of a system and the cost of sensor failure is significantly higherthan the cost of the sensor. Prime examples of this are projects where the results are worth more than the sum of their parts, including:
Fusion reactors
Space telescopes
Maglev locomotives
Supercolliders
Research satellites

Features of HR Series Sensors
Reduced lead time
No hidden costs: Customers only pay for the sensors that are purchased
Full material traceability for 15 years
Confidence is gained from the test protocol
Resistance and sensitivity data is available for all sensors
Reduce Risk on Critical Projects
On Time
Following standardized testing procedures, these sensors are built on regular production schedules and stocked for quick delivery, resulting in lead times equivalent to standard commercial sensors. The predefinedtesting protocol also reduces paperwork since it is unnecessaryto define different detailed sensor requirements for each program.
On Budget
In the past, sensor procurement for critical programs required that additional sensors for destructive qualification tests be purchased for each lot, raising the project’s total cost without increasing the number of sensors available for installation. HR sensors are different.
Lake Shore conducts the qualification testing for each lot, and sensor buyers receive the screening and qualification test report at no extra cost. Using HR sensors, users onlypay for the sensors they require.
Test Protocols Include:
Acceptance Steps
Full lot traceability for at least 15 years
Fine hermetic seal
Burn-in (one week)
Before sealing, the sensor will undergo an independent inspection
Constant acceleration (20000 gs)
Gross hermetic seal
Particle impact noise detection (PIND) test
Visual inspection to MIL standards
X-Ray (internal defects and wire clearance)
Thermal cycling (repeated between 298 and 4.2 K)
Qualification Tests
Wire bond cross-section
Independent destructive physical analysis
Vibration testing
Life test (up to 2,000 hours)
External bond pad bondability
Mechanical shock
Die shear strength
Outgassing
Wire bond strength
Thermal shock (100 shocks)
